EDL: an ode to Curiosity and Perseverance

Coasting through space, final checks all “go”
I am targeted at a tiny sliver of atmosphere on the limb.
No ability to abort, it is time to cast off my interplanetary machinery.
Slowly as a crushing pressure builds on my bones,
my skin ablates to slow down and not overheat.
I bank left, right, then left again to correct my range to target, eventually back to upright where I can jettison my lift-generating mass.
Deceleration dwindles as the timeline ticks down…

Still not slow enough,
I pop the chute to a breath taking jolt.
Rapidly pitching over,
I drop my charred fore-body.
My eyes now see the LZ!
Calculating the safe site for my final target…

But wait! The winds carry me away!
Fuel margins for the divert to safety
dwindling with every meter traveled,
my powered flight altitude approaches.
I need to take control!

Firing up the engines,
I drop out of the parachute+backshell and fly free!

As the indicator plummets on the limited fuel I carry from Earth,
I thankfully arrive and settle in at my desired touchdown speed over the safe landing site I picked.
While descending, I suddenly must reduce throttle to maintain downward speed — my payload must be on the surface! Separate the suspension lines, and begone trusty jetpack, for we have arrived —
Time for exploration and discovery to begin!
